Secular/Profane (2014)
Living in East Los Angeles, I find myself intrigued by murals of the Virgin Mary in the city, specifically those on secular locations. I wanted to explore the idea of the sacred and the profane, so I took on the challenge of dressing as the Virgin Mary and immersing myself in secular locations, as a reference to the murals, and to juxtapose the irony of the secular/profane. I extended the project by having the Virgin Mary explore actions that occur in such locations by photographing her engaging in profane acts. I found myself reflecting on the unrealistic expectations on women.
